A teacher’s role in the classroom encompasses many different aspects in today’s society. Not only are teachers responsible for a child’s learning development, they must also be a mentor, a role model, an advocate and many other figures that shape a student’s life. I believe a teacher is responsible for evaluating each child individually in order to guide the learning process in a way that all children will be able to master the tasks necessary to be successful in life. Children have different ways of learning; teachers need to adapt their lessons to include different methods in order to keep the children interested and on track. Ideally, we would all learn by simply reading instructions, this is not the case for most students. For instance, some children learn by hands on methods, a teacher should use interactive activities for these students. Others learn from verbal instruction, they may read texts or materials but not quite grasp the concepts unless someone explains it to them. Successful teacher should take the time to address the learning needs of each of their students.
Teaching children traditional knowledge is only one aspect of a teacher’s job. A teacher should also strive to inspire a child to want to learn, while they are with them and in the future. In order to do this we should make learning a fun and happy experience and as stress free as possible. Children need exposure to new things that help them grow and reach beyond their everyday experiences. I believe that the basics are and always will be important, but we should also be implementing the pillars of 21st Century Education. Our children today need to learn skills such as critical thinking, globalization, language learning and character development. All of these things will be what our kids need for the future. I believe teaching is by far the most important vocation anyone can pursue; entrusted to us are the children and the future. We need to approach this job with the utmost enthusiasm and dedication. We owe it to the children to give them the best education possible. Many children to do not get the support at home that they need to prosper at school. We as educators need to be aware of students individual personal needs as well. If a student is struggling or seems to be distracted we should make every effort to find out what if any problems exist that may be causing the issues. I recently heard the quote “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” I was unable to find out the origination of that quote because many people have been credited for saying it. This are words to live by, especially in the classroom.
A student’s role in education is to come to school with an open mind and a thirst for knowledge. A student cannot always control the environment that surrounds them; they may not have the ability to come to class prepared with all the materials needed for that day, such as paper and pencils. Students should however know that the real resource needed to learn is their mind. They should contribute enthusiasm, cooperation, an open mind and the willingness to learn. They should challenge themselves to complete assignments to the best of their abilities. They should also show respect to their peers and the teachers and staff of the school. They should also take part in peer tutoring activities when necessary, as this is a very effective method for students who are in need of help. As for what students should learn, there will always be the need for the basics; again, I feel very strongly about the 21st Century education pillars. We must teach today’s kids on a broader scale. The technological advances of the past 20 years have changed our world in many ways; therefore, we need to teach them not only about technology and its uses but about the global market the technology opens up to us. Also, we need more cultural education, so children can be more tolerant of different people and their customs; along the same lines is foreign language education, we are seeing the rapid increase for our students to become bilingual. The most important thing we can stress is critical thinking. The days of memorization of facts are gone; students need to be able to draw conclusions, make hypotheses, and come up with multiple solutions to the problems they race.
Learning should be fun; the more we expose our students to the greater chance we have of sparking their interest. A child may never know how much they love art, music, or drama unless we show them, gives them a chance to become interested in these things. The more we broaden their horizon the more likely they are to find the thing that interests them and keeps them motivated.
In conclusion, I think as teachers we should be able to grow with our children; we should stay current on what is going on in the world of education so that we will be able to develop our children in a manner that will prepare them for the world in front of them. We also need to remember to be a role model and mentor; these are very important parts of our jobs. Children will look to us for guidance; we should be there to support them in any way possible. Possibly the most important aspect is that of inspiration. If we teach them to dream, show them there is a world out there just waiting for them and they have the ability to do whatever they dream about, this will inspire them to strive to get there through education. Teach them with enthusiasm and open doors for them that they did not even know existed and then show them they can go through that door. I believe in well-rounded education that comes from interaction, participation and enthusiasm. We should never forget that each child is special and different in its own way. We should take the time to give them what they need to grow and bloom.
